To create a grammar by hand can be a demanding, tedious and difficult task, especially if you need a large grammar. Typically, a large grammar is what you need when you are building a professional system, like a machine translator or a dialogue system. What you want to do is to acquire your grammar from a large resource of natural language, like a treebank. To automatically learn a grammar by induction is a difficult task. However, many attempts has been made with more or less successful results, and methods regarding many different grammar formalisms have been explored. In recent years a more programmer-driven grammar formalism has seen the light of day. It is simply called Grammatical Framework or GF.
